2009 Math Teacher Workshop

OBC has partnered with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries to offer a Math Teachers Workshop in Portland this summer. The workshop will focus on how basic math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry are used every day in construction. Apprenticeship training instructors will facilitate the workshop and sessions will include classroom and field-based learning. Apprenticeship training partners include the NECA-IBEW Electrical Training Center, Willamette Carpenters Training Center, HVAC & Metals Institute, Portland General Electric and the Northwest College of Construction. Participants will visit a different apprenticeship training center each day of the workshop.Each day will also include an hour of lesson planning facilitated by Academy for Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) Master Teacher, Doug Mella, to process the knowledge gained through the industry-led sessions and use it to create applied curriculum specific to each participant's classroom needs.
The workshop will be most appropriate for upper level middle school and most high school math and construction technology teachers. The workshop is open to teachers from throughout Oregon. Class size will be limited to 15 teachers.
Credit through Portland State University, Continuing Education/Graduate School of Education may be available to participating teachers for $55 per credit. The workshop will be offered at no cost to teachers but requires a $100 fully refundable deposit to reserve a spot.
