2009 Polk County Construction Crew Program
The 2009 Polk Summer Work Program is funded by the Enterprise for Employment and Education and coordinated by the Polk Summer Work Program in Independence, Oregon. WIA-eligible youth ages 17-24 will learn about careers in sustainabilty-related industries by completing stream restoration projects and green building projects. Youth will gain hands-on experience working on a construction project while learning how the built environment impacts our communities, ecosystems and future.
The program is open to male and female youth who:
- qualify as lower income (click here to see if you qualify),
- are between the ages of 17-24 years old,
- can legally work in the US and show appropriate ID on the first day, and
- have completed basic math courses and have a proven interest in construction.
We are looking for youth who are physically fit, like the outdoors, have a strong work ethic, and are willing and eager to learn.
Youth will work in a team of ten with two supervisors to complete stream restoration projects, green building projects, and/or sidewalk repair work. The program combines real-life building with hands-on educational field days so participants will learn about science, math, construction, life skills, and construction-related career opportunities.
Participants will earn $8.40/hour for all learning and working time. The crew leaders will facilitate lessons in job training and work readiness.
Construction Crew members will work Monday – Friday from June 17 through August 11, 2009. Participants will work six hours/day Monday - Thursday and eight hours/day on Fridays. Work start and end times may vary during extremely hot weeks or when travel for a field trip requires a minor shift in working hours.
